Things That Do Not Make Me Feel Like A Grown-Up: Feeding Myself
1) I kinda like to cook. I do not like to make decisions about what to eat.
2) In fact, I really hate making decisions about what to eat so much that on many days it's the most stressful thing I do. (Hey, I''m a government worker. I've got to get my stress somewhere, right?)
3) Try explaining that you can't even tell if you care too much or nowhere near enough to make decisions about what to eat and see if you can do it without sounding nuts. Try doing that with coworkers. Or family. Or dates. Or near strangers. Or anybody at all. Go ahead, I'll wait.
4) Most of the time, at least by dinner, all I want is someone to tell me what I'm eating. They could make it for me and serve it on a TV tray next to a glass of Knob Creek on the rocks, but I'd be okay with them just telling me.
5) Grown-ups should act deliberately, with thoughtfulness, planning, and decisiveness. Unless I'm feeling inspired, I will go hunting and gathering in my refrigerator until I compile a mean from frozen peas, almond butter, and crackers.
*Buzz marketing plug: short of living with my parents, Blue Apron has been the single best thing to help me feel slightly less un-adult-ish. Somebody wants to send ingredients to me, teach me to cook, and save me from making any actual decisions, all for less than I would pay for takeout in any of my neighborhood takeout spots? Yes, please!
